Data Recovery Software

Overview

Data recovery is the process of restoring data from disks, tapes, CDs, memory cards, or hard drives that has been damaged by accidents, power surges, natural disasters, or device failure. A proper data recovery system needs to be organized in such a way that it is easy to access and also lets you update information when needed.

In general, data recovery software is classified into two main types - common recoveries, which involve recovering data from floppies and hard drives, and complex recoveries, which involve data recovering from RAID arrays, tape and optical media.

How It Works

Data recovery is a simple copy procedure in which the data in a failed peripheral is recovered. There are two methods to recover data - consistency checking and data carving. The consistency checking method scans the logical structure of the disk and makes sure that it complies with the specification. The data carving method searches through raw sectors and finds files that match the specifications. This method is called file carving because the information about the file to be searched is specified and the file relating to it is recovered. Additionally, a file system repair program is used to ensure that the file exists and points to the correct directories. However, there is a consequential problem related to it; they will either recognize the file as valid or delete it for smoother processing.

Benefits

The primary benefit of data recovery software is the recovery of lost data. Recovering lost information is essential for business operations, particularly if the information lost is confidential and/or necessary for the business to operate. Another benefit of data recovery software is that it enables a company to setup a temporary base for business somewhere else to protect against system failures. Many programs available today are integrated and one aspect of missing data can shut down an entire network of programs, so it is of the upmost importance to have excellent data recovery software installed in your business.

Costs

The cost of data recovery software varies based upon several factors. If you have a small amount of data that has been lost, you may benefit from inexpensive software that lacks advanced features. However, even if you are missing large amounts of data, it is not necessary to spend a lot of money. Hard drive recovery can cost as little as $200 depending on the size and nature of the problem. Complex data that runs networks will require more complicated data recovery software and, as a result, can be a bit more expensive.

Timing

No one likes to think about data loss in their company, but this is precisely the type of proactive thinking needed to prevent a potential disaster. The best time to install data recovery software is before you actually need to use it because it gives you the best possible chance for a full recovery.
