Forklifts
Overview
Forklifts are industrial vehicles used to lift heavy items like shipping boxes and pallets. Forklifts are predominantly found in industrial and other types of businesses where lifting and transportation of goods takes place. They provide smooth operation of day to day business for many warehouses, manufacturers, lumber yards, and many other businesses.
How it Works
There are many factors you need to consider before you procure a forklift for your business. First of all, you should consider the typical weight and size of the loads that you expect the forklift to lift and/or transport. Generally, the capacity of a forklift is calculated based on a 24 inch load center. In other words, the distance from the center of gravity to the end of the load is 24". The capacity is also dependant on the shape of the load.
The height to which the loads are expected to be lifted is also a factor in determining your forklift. Other factors to include ergonomics, safety features, service plans, tilt mast, and training.
Other lifting equipments like pallet lifts, pallet jacks, order pickers, sit down riders, reach trucks, and stackers may also be procured to accomplish a variety of lifting tasks. Specialty terrains are also available to tackle tough terrains.
It is advisable that you procure all your lifting equipments and forklifts from a single brand as it will make it a lot easier for your employees to pick up the functioning of the machinery easily.
Benefits
Lifting heavy loads and moving them from one location to another is a tedious task; even more so if they have to be lifted to and from heights. Forklifts can make this task a lot easier and faster.
There are many different types of forklifts to suit various requirements including the size and height of picking and placing the load, as well as the terrains on which the forklift is expected to function.
Costs
Forklifts are certainly not a cheap investment. The average price range varies between $5,000 and $10,000.
You may consider purchasing a used forklift too, especially if you only have limited use of a forklift, such as only one to four hours a day. However, if forklifts are going to be used excessively in your business, then it is a good idea to get a new one.
If you are unable to manage the finances for a forklift, then renting is also an option. Once you get a hang of the working a forklift and you muster enough money, you can buy either a new or a used forklift.
Timing
If your business involves a lot of lifting and transportation of heavy loads and the other lifting equipments are incapable of serving your purpose, then you have no choice but to acquire a forklift.
